New South Wales is most populous state in Australia. It is located in the south-east of the country, south of Queensland, east of South Australia, north of Victoria and encompasses the whole of the Australian Capital Territory.
New South Wales containes one third of population in Australia. The capital and the largest city is Sydney. The colony of New South Wales was founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian mainland and islands.
The state can be divided geographically into four areas. The New South Wales’ three largest cities are Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle. Most of the state has semi arid or an arid climate. The eastern portion has a temperate climate. The Snowy Mountains region falls in the alpine climate zone, with cold weather all year around.
